Search underway for 24 year-old sand harvester in River Nzoia.

Residents of Ligega sub-location in Ugunja sub-county are engulfed in grief and agony following the tragic drowning of a 24-year-old sand harvester in the waters of River Nzoia this afternoon.

The sand harvester, identified as Evans Otieno Odhiambo, met his untimely demise when he was swept away by the fast-moving waters while attempting to harvest sand at the riverbank.

According to the area Assistant Chief, Mr. Sylvester Ouma, Odhiambo was with a colleague when he slipped and fell into the water, where he was swiftly carried away by the current.

During the incident, Odhiambo’s colleagues made frantic attempts to rescue him, but their efforts were futile due to the rising water levels in recent weeks.

The administrator mentioned that efforts are underway to retrieve Odhiambo’s body, expressing hope that it will be recovered within the next three days.

Mr. Ouma, who confirmed the unfortunate incident, took the opportunity to caution the public, particularly sand harvesters, urging them to suspend their activities along the river until the rains subside.

He emphasized that the water levels are dangerously high, increasing the risk of further tragedies, and urged everyone to exercise caution and prioritize safety.
