Siaya Prison Break; an in-mate walks free after a movie like escape.

In a scenario that seems straight out of a Hollywood movie, one inmate managed to outmaneuver prison wardens and slip away from Siaya GK prison, now walking free.

The inmate, Joseph Otieno Okombo, aged 27, was serving a two-year jail term when he executed his daring escape, leaving authorities bewildered.

According to a police incident report filed at Siaya Police Station, three inmates collaborated on the escape plan. While two of them, Fidel Omondi and George Akumu, were swiftly rearrested and are currently awaiting court appearances, Okombo successfully eluded capture.

The midday escape prompted police to resort to firing warning shots in the air in a bid to deter the fleeing inmates.

A source within Siaya GK prison, speaking anonymously, disclosed that the inmates seized an opportunity while working in a garden adjacent to the prison.

“They were weeding beans at the farm alongside other inmates when Okombo requested to relieve himself in the nearby bush. The officers, unsuspecting, granted his request,” explained the source.

Capitalizing on Okombo’s successful exit, the other two inmates also sought permission under the guise of attending to nature’s call, a move seemingly premeditated.

“As soon as the first inmate was granted permission, the other two swiftly followed suit. Before the officers could react, the trio vanished into thin air,” detailed the source.

A vigorous pursuit ensued, with officers firing shots into the air as the escapees dispersed into the surrounding area. The farm where the inmates were working borders the agricultural land of Jaramogi Oginga Odinga University of Science and Technology.

“The officers initiated a relentless search. The escapees utilized the thick vegetation surrounding the farm to evade capture. Despite the challenges, the arrest of the two was made possible through concerted efforts, while the hunt for Okombo continues,” added the informant.

Okombo, a resident of Ambira village in Ugunja sub-county, remains at large, prompting intensified search efforts.

Furthermore, it was disclosed that the two rearrested inmates sustained bullet wounds during the pursuit and are currently receiving medical treatment under tight security at Siaya County Referral Hospital.

Local residents around Uhongo village recounted hearing the deafening sounds of gunfire as the search unfolded, underscoring the intensity of the pursuit.
