Why Christopher Rusana easily won the Migori Speaker seat.

Former Migori County Secretary Christopher Odhiambo Rusana has been elected as the new Speaker after receiving the support of 45 MCAs.

He is from the Suna Clan within Migori County; the seat of speaker was reserved for the Suna clan which are mainly found in Suna West and Suna East sub-counties.

Mr. Rusana, a seasoned civil servant, will succeed former Migori MP Owino Likowa, who was impeached last month; he was also from the Suna clan.

Earlier before the elections, his close competitor and former Suna West MP Joseph Ndiege steeped down in his favor; Mr Ndiege is also from Suna Clan.

Out of 18 applicants vying for the position, only 12 were shortlisted. In the end, Mr. Rusana emerged victorious in the first round of voting, securing 45 votes. Francis Ndar received 13 votes, while Allan Chacha only managed to garner 1 vote.

Other candidates included Mdeizi Sagwa, Willia Aluoch, Steve Ogony, former Suna West MP Obiero Ndiege, Tony Blair, Allan Chacha, Castro Baraza, Jane Marowa, Peter Jobando, and Jared Awuonda.

The Migori County Assembly has seen numerous changes in leadership since the advent of devolution, unlike some counties such as Siaya, which have maintained the same speaker for three consecutive terms.”
