The outbreak of the Red Eye disease in Siaya has sparked concern among locals, many of whom are unsure how to effectively control its spread.
Addressing members of the public during today’s Madaraka Day celebrations, Siaya County Commissioner Nobert Komora emphasized the importance of precautionary measures.
He disclosed that cases of Red Eye disease have been reported in numerous boarding schools across Siaya County.
“The Red Eye disease is particularly prevalent in our boarding schools,” stated the administrator.
The increasing number of students diagnosed with the eye infection nearly prompted the closure of some schools.
However, following consultations with the Ministry of Health, it was decided to contain the outbreak within the school premises.
“Due to the escalating cases of Red Eye infections, there was consideration given to shutting down schools. However, we realized that such a measure could potentially spread the disease to various households,” explained Komora.
In an effort to promote safety, Komora emphasized the need for lifestyle adjustments, including refraining from traditional handshakes.
“I urge everyone to prioritize cleanliness and refrain from shaking hands as a greeting. It has been established that this practice can facilitate the transmission of disease-causing pathogens,” he urged.
Many members of the public expressed concern over this new development, acknowledging that it may introduce a new normal in social interactions.
