Shock as wife inheritor burns house of a widow he inherited

UGENYA: Police in Ukwala, Ugenya sub-county, are detaining a man who allegedly set fire to the house of the woman he inherited following the death of her husband.

The incident, which took place on June 3, has shocked the villagers, prompting questions about the nature of the relationship between the couple.

According to the widowed woman, Grace Auma 37, she had a disagreement with her partner, Isaiah Goro Odhiambo, aged 32, and chose to spend the night away from their home.

Upon returning the next morning at 6 am, she discovered that her two-room mud-walled house had been completely destroyed by fire, along with all the belongings inside.

“The accused, Isaiah Goro Odhiambo, aged 32, with whom they reside together, had a disagreement with Grace Auma, forcing her to seek refuge elsewhere for the night. Upon her return the following morning at 6:00 am, she found her two-roomed mud-walled house burnt to the ground, and the accused was missing from the scene. The property lost in the fire includes a wooden bed (4×6 inches), a high-density mattress (4×6 inches), four super drums (each 100 liters), one solar panel, two bed sheets, one duvet blanket, one suitcase full of assorted clothes, and the building itself, all valued at Sh54,000,” read a police incident report.

The police visited the scene and apprehended the suspect.
