Nakuru East Member of Parliament David Gikaria and his wife appeared in public wearing outfits meant to symbolize their plea for forgiveness from enraged constituents following his yes vote on the Finance Bill 2024.
The lawmaker had a t-shirt bearing the message, “I am sorry, please forgive me” and that of his wife “he is sorry, please forgive him.”
Mr. Gikaria is among the 204 lawmakers who supported the bill despite strong public outcry for its rejection.
To evade angry youths who had stormed Parliament under the #occupyparliament protest, lawmakers had to be evacuated via helicopters and ambulances.
The protesters, identified as Gen Zs born between 1997 and 2006, caused a chaotic scene resulting in the deaths of six youths and injuries to several others.
Mr. Gikaria’s apology is part of efforts by many lawmakers who suffered significant financial losses after voting in favor of the bill.
Other affected MPs include Kimani Ichungwa (Kikuyu), Kuria Kimani (Molo), Oscar Sudi (Kapseret), and John Kiarie (Dagoreti South).
