Seven people buried alive at a Gold Mine in Rarieda-Siaya

Seven artisanal miners tragically lost their lives at Kasweto gold-mine in Lumba Village, Rarieda sub-county, when a mine shaft collapsed and buried them.

The incident occurred mid-morning while 11 miners were inside the shaft.

Simon Olielo expressed deep sorrow over the loss, stating, “It is a sad morning for us as members of Lumba Kobong village. We have lost young people, one of them being my elder brother.”

Four survivors were rushed to Bondo sub-county hospital for urgent medical attention.

Meanwhile, the bodies of the deceased miners were taken to Bondo sub-county hospital for autopsy, following procedures led by the police who continue their investigations.

Siaya County Police Commander Kleti Kimaiyo confirmed the fatalities, stating, “So far, seven people have lost their lives at the gold mine, and the bodies have been taken to the mortuary awaiting post-mortem examination. Our officers are on the ground investigating the matter.”
