Wisdom Mwamburi, the Speaker of Taita Taveta County Assembly, has been impeached following a majority vote by the MCAs in favor of his removal.
The impeachment took place on Wednesday afternoon, with 28 out of 31 MCAs voting against him on grounds of gross misconduct, loss of confidence among assembly members, and incompetence.
The MCAs had raised various grievances against Mwamburi, accusing him of undermining their authority, neglecting their welfare, and showing disrespect towards them.
The Assembly Clerk, Gadiel Maganga, served Mwamburi with a notice of impeachment on July 2, just a day before the vote.
Following his impeachment, Deputy Speaker Anslem Mwadime will assume the role in an acting capacity until a new speaker is elected or until Mwamburi’s situation is resolved.
Mwamburi’s removal mirrors a similar event in Migori County just two months ago when MCAs ousted Speaker Charles Owino Likowa under similar circumstances.
Likowa, a seasoned politician who had served two terms as Member of Parliament for Migori Constituency, was subsequently replaced by Christopher Rusana.
