Body of an Asian man retrieved from River Yala

SIAYA: Police in Siaya have launched an investigation into the body of a male adult believed to be of Asian origin retrieved from River Yala on Tuesday, August 27.

The body was first spotted by a member of the public who was bathing by the riverbank.

Joshua Otieno, a human rights activist with Haki Kwetu, stated that the body appeared to be that of an Asian individual.

“We received information about the body last week on Friday. We went to the river on Tuesday, where, with the help of local divers and the OCS Yala Police Station, we managed to retrieve the body,” said Mr. Otieno.

He claimed that when they took the body to Yala Mortuary, the facility refused to accept it.

The body was then taken to Siaya County Referral Hospital, where the relatives positively identified it. “It is surprising that the administration at Yala, a public facility, would refuse to accept a body,” Otieno remarked.

Today, at midday, the family of the deceased positively identified the body. According to Siaya Police, a post-mortem will be conducted to establish the cause of death, after which the body will be handed over to the family for interment.

River Yala shot into the limelight when 32 bodies were retrieved two years ago; the incidents subsided before sprouting again.
