Kenyans online have laughed off the lenient sentencing issued to foreign drug traffickers who were arrested in Kenya.
According to a JKIA Court, the two foreigners who pleaded guilty to the charges, will pay a hefty fine of Sh30 million or serve a one year jail term in Kenya.
The convicts Ilo Ebuka Titus and Kanu Arinze, were arrested on March 13, 2024, during an intelligence-led operation in the Nyamakima area.
The operation was carried out by detectives from the Transnational Organized Crimes Unit, assisted by the Anti-Narcotics Unit.
Following their arrest, Titus and Arinze led the detectives to their residences in Umoja and Sunton.
While there, the authorities discovered 39.04 grams of heroin and 25.71 grams of cannabis.
The two were processed and arraigned, where they pleaded guilty to the charges.
Additionally, the court ordered that Titus and Arinze be repatriated to their country of origin upon completion of their sentence or payment of the fine.
The court also mandated the destruction of the seized narcotics.
The judgement by the court elicited mixed reactions online, Kondele News sampled a few of the views.
Kague Kamumbu wrote; Mnasumbua sana organic farmers but hardcore crime is where you draw the line. This judgement needs to be investigated and appealed. Nobody should be making a mockery out of our legal system!
Nina J-one commented; The fine is okay but the alternative of 12 months imprisonment is a joke .the judgement should be appealed by the state for a better sentence
Patrick Chege commented; 1 year in prison is 7 months max.then go back to business as usual.penaulty is not punitive anyway
Jerry Waswa said; One year! I can bet they will choose to serve 1 year and continue the business in our prisons
