Mombasa Governor, Abduswamad Nassir, wants a ban on vehicles using ferry after accident

MOMBASA: Following an accident on Sunday morning at Likoni Ferry, Mombasa Governor Abdulswamad Nassir is advocating for a ban on vehicles using the Likoni ferry.

The incident involved a bus traveling from Ukunda to Nairobi, which tipped over while disembarking, leaving nine passengers injured.

After visiting the injured at Coast General Teaching and Referral Hospital, Governor Nassir highlighted the urgent need for enhanced safety measures for both pedestrians and motorists.

“The county government is deeply concerned about the safety of all ferry users,” he stated.

To prevent future accidents, he plans to propose to the national government that vehicular traffic on the ferry be halted.

He urged residents and travelers to remain cautious as emergency teams continue their work at the scene.

Nassir extended his support to the victims and their families, wishing them a speedy recovery.

In response to the incident, volunteers from the Kenya Red Cross, alongside the National Police Service and Kenya Ferry Authority, provided emergency assistance.

Seven people received treatment at the scene, while two others were taken to the hospital.
