Sofapaka’s head coach, Matano, is navigating speculation about his future amid reports of a potential move to Tanzanian side Coastal Union.
However, he insists he remains committed to the Kenyan club and will only leave under the terms of his contract.
Last week, news emerged that Matano was in Tanzania for discussions with Coastal Union.
“It is true I went to Tanzania to talk to Coastal Union, and this is an ongoing process. I have a binding contract with Sofapaka and cannot just walk out without their consent. I am disappointed that the issue was blown out of proportion. This is unfair, not just to me but to the club as well,” he stated.
Matano joined Sofapaka at the beginning of the season after former coach Zedekiah Otieno departed while the club was participating in the playoffs.
This marks Matano’s second stint with the club; he made history in 2009 by helping them qualify for the Football Kenya Premier League (FKPL) and win it in their maiden season.
The current season has been tough, with the team yet to secure a win—recording one draw and three losses in their first four matches.
They were recently allowed to sign new players after a suspension by FIFA due to unpaid salaries and signing fees owed to former players.
If Matano does move to Coastal Union, he would take over from fellow Kenyan David Ouma, who left the Tanzanian club unexpectedly last month after helping them finish fourth in the league, qualifying for continental competition for the first time in over ten years.
