Renowned activist Boniface Mwangi has been released on a personal bond of Sh1 million following his arraignment at the Kahawa Law Courts, where he faced charges of illegal possession of ammunition.
In his ruling, Principal Magistrate Gideon Kiage ordered Mwangi’s release on bond.
“The accused person may be set at liberty upon securing a personal bond of Sh1 million with one authority of similar amount.”
Mwangi, who pleaded not guilty, was charged with possessing ammunition without a valid firearm certificate.
His legal team, led by Mwaura Kabata—Vice President of the Law Society of Kenya—and Lawyer Ndegwa Njiru, argued for his release on reasonable bail terms, emphasizing his known public profile and cooperative nature.
“The accused person is a confirmed activist and a defender of our Constitution,” Njiru told the court, adding that Mwangi is not a flight risk and that both his residence and place of business are known to the arresting officers.
The defense also urged the court to transfer the case to the Milimani Law Courts, citing the withdrawal of terrorism-related charges initially brought against him. The matter will be mentioned again in 14 days for pre-trial directions.
Mwangi’s court appearance followed his arrest on Saturday. Although the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) had earlier indicated he would face terror-related charges, these were dropped before the hearing.
