Man Killed, Two Injured in Brutal Attack at Nyando Funeral

KISUMU: Police in Kisumu County have launched a manhunt for a gang that violently disrupted a funeral ceremony in Nyando, fatally attacking a man and injuring two others, including a 13-year-old boy.

The incident occurred on the morning of Saturday, July 25, in the Wawidhi area, where mourners had gathered to pay their last respects to the late Angeline Odago.

According to witnesses and police reports, a group of unidentified individuals stormed the event armed with crude weapons and began attacking mourners indiscriminately.

Kevin Obat, a 32-year-old man, suffered deep head injuries during the assault and later died while receiving treatment at a nearby hospital.

Two other victims, among them a teenage boy, were seriously wounded and remain hospitalized with head injuries.

The attackers fled the scene immediately after the assault. Police say the motive behind the attack is still unclear but confirmed that a murder investigation has been launched.

This violent disruption has added to growing fears among residents following a similar incident reported just last week in Kisumu East Sub-County.

Armed robbers targeted a funeral gathering in Daraja Mbili area of Manyatta B Slums Estate, where mourners had assembled at the home of the late Susan Achieng Otieno.

The assailants allegedly aimed to steal from the bereaved attendees, but swift action by police and vigilant locals led to the arrest of three male suspects.

The back-to-back incidents have sparked widespread concern over increasing insecurity during funeral ceremonies and other communal gatherings in the region.
