Forgive us for killing Luanda Magere, Head of Public Service Felix Koskei offers apology to Luos.

Head of Public Service Felix Koskei has extended an apology to the Luo community on behalf of the Kalenjin Community regarding the historical death of the renowned Luo legend, Luanda Magere.

Mr. Koskei, during his visit to Gangu village in Asembo-Rarieda sub-county, emphasized the familial connection between the two regions.

“Allow me to express our heartfelt apology on behalf of the Kalenjin Community for the tragic demise of Luanda Magere many years ago,” he conveyed.

He went on to underscore the significance of Luanda’s death, noting that it ultimately fostered peace between the two neighboring communities, which share a common ancestry.

“We recognize that the conflict leading to Luanda Magere’s demise stemmed from struggles for survival. The past tensions were driven by territorial disputes, but it ultimately resulted in a lasting peace between us,” he added.

Mr. Koskei emphasized the need for the Kalenjins and Luos to embrace their shared heritage and foster harmonious coexistence.

“As cousins, it is imperative for us to live in harmony. Our interconnectedness is evident through various familial ties. For instance, the descendants of Luanda Magere’s wife have integrated into communities across Rift Valley, including Kericho, Nandi, and Bomet Counties,” he further stated.

According to the legend, in ancient times, when the communities were settling in their current territories, conflicts arose between the Luos and the Kalenjins.

Luos often emerged victorious in battles due to the extraordinary strength of a legendary warrior named Luanda Magere, whose power was said to reside in his shadow, akin to the Biblical figure Samson.

To eliminate Luanda Magere, the Kalenjin Community initiated negotiations for peace with their Luo neighbors.

As a gesture of goodwill, Kalenjin elders offered Magere a beautiful virgin to be one of his wives. Unbeknownst to Magere, the maiden was a spy planted by the Kalenjin community.

Despite warnings from his community and wives, Luanda Magere succumbed to his desire and married the maiden. She eventually discovered the secret of his strength and betrayed him to her kinsmen, leading to his demise in a subsequent war.
