In another dramatic turn in Kenyan history, victims of police shootings during recent demonstrations are being laid to rest draped in the Kenyan flag. This symbolic gesture, traditionally reserved for military personnel killed in action, marks a profound shift in national recognition.

Rex Masai, Kelvin Mwawasi, and several other young individuals who tragically succumbed to gunshot wounds are now being honored with their caskets draped in the national colors.

Human Rights Defender Boniface Mwangi, advocating for the burial of these young heroes, emphasized the significance of their sacrifice, stating they died in defense of their country.

This poignant display underscores a powerful narrative of courage and sacrifice amidst turbulent times, resonating deeply within Kenyan society.

“You can’t PR yourself out of killing innocent children for taking part in peaceful protests. Andrew Kelvin Mwawasi has been laid to rest. For those who can, please make an effort to atttend the funerals of those the state murdered. Bury them with the Kenyan flag, they died for us,” posted Mr Mwangi.

During Rex Masai’s funeral, Mwangi emotionally reflected on one of the most poignant moments of his life: retrieving Rex’s body from the streets and ensuring it reached the mortuary.
