Journalists based in Nakuru took to the streets today to protest after their colleague, a Kameme TV reporter, was shot while covering a protest.
Wanjeri Kariuki, a K24 reporter, was shot three times in the thigh and was taken to Nakuru PGH Annex for surgery.
The act of shooting a journalist, who was clearly identifiable by a brown jacket labeled “PRESS,” has sparked outrage within the media fraternity.
Kenya Union of Journalists (KUJ) Secretary Erick Oduor, in a statement, condemned the police’s use of force against journalists, calling it rudimentary.
The President of the Kenya Editors Guild, Zubeida Kananu, also condemned the incident, urging the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) to investigate the conduct of some officers deployed to manage the demonstrations.
