17 pupils killed by fire at Hillside Academy

At least 17 pupils have lost their lives following a fire outbreak in one of the dormitories at Hillside Endarasha Academy in Kieni constituency, Nyeri county.

Sources indicate that 16 pupils were burnt beyond recognition in the Thursday night fire while one succumbed to the injuries while receiving treatment.

Reports further indicate that 14 other pupils were rushed to the hospital with serious burns.

Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Ogamba regreted the unfortunate incident, calling for a quick thorough and comprehensive investigation into the matter.

“The ministry of education is working with the ministry of interior and national administration and other relevant agencies to address the incident and support the victims and their families,” said Ogamba.

The CS expressed his condolences to the families who lost their loved ones and wished quick recovery to the injured pupils.

President William Ruto joined the CS in sending his condolences to the bereaved, while calling for quick investigations into the incident.

“I instruct relevant authorities to thoroughly investigate this horrific incident. Those responsible will be held to account.” he stated.

The president also extended his prayers for the survivors wishing them a speedy recovery.

“We pray for a speedy recovery to the survivors,” he added.

The course of fire is yet to be established.
