A tragic incident has occurred involving a junior athlete in the Kaptagat area of Elgeyo Marakwet County.
Willy Chelewa, a 28-year-old athlete, collapsed and died at a hotel where he had been staying while training with fellow athletes.
County Police Commander Peter Mulinge confirmed the incident, stating that Chelewa died after consuming a meal at the hotel.
Chelewa, who had competed in the Nairobi City Marathon and secured a sponsorship for international races in China, had finished the race in 65 minutes and 30 seconds, securing the 67th position in the half marathon.
On the day of his death, he had reportedly consumed black tea and rice before collapsing.
The hotel management promptly reported the matter to the police, who arrived at the scene to collect samples of the meals Chelewa consumed for further investigation.
The hotel had been Chelewa’s base during his training sessions with his colleagues, as the area is known for its numerous training camps.
