Kisumu family mourning daughter who drowned after sitting KPSEA exams

A family in Kisumu County is grieving the untimely death of their daughter Sarah Kemunto who drowned in river Nyando on November 1.

The 12-year-old had just completed her Kenya Primary School Education Assessment (KPSEA).

Sarah’s mother, Constance Kemunto recalled her last conversation with her daughter.

“It was around 1pm, I had no reservations when she told me she wanted to play with her cousins after completing the house chores,” said Constance.

Constance allowed Sarah to go to her aunt’s place, only for her to hear that her daughter had drowned a few hours later.

Daniel Maeba, Sarah’s father echoed Constance, adding that Sarah was in high spirits after her national exams, promising to work hard not to disappoint him or her mom.

Sarah’s cousin, Lavender Gesare said that they cautioned Sarah against going for a swim but she pleaded with them to join her, promising that they wouldn’t take long.

Sarah dived into the water and resurfaced quickly, handing her rosary to her cousin for safe keeping.

However, her second dive proved tragic as she did not resurface.

Her body was discovered three kilometer away downstream.
