The older you get, the less sleep you get…study reveals

As we age, our sleep needs and sleep habits evolve, leading to changes in sleep quality and duration.

While younger adults tend to sleep longer and more soundly, older adults often experience shorter, more disrupted sleep patterns.

According to Alicia Roth, PhD, a sleep psychologist at the Cleveland Clinic, sleep changes as we move from younger adulthood to older age.

“As we age, sleep tends to become shorter and more interrupted, especially in the middle of the night,” says Dr. Roth. “We also experience less deep, restorative sleep.”

While sleep issues can occur at any age, older adults are more likely to experience them. In fact, over 50% of adults over age 65 report having at least one sleep problem.

These sleep disorders can stem from various causes, including medications, underlying health conditions like sleep apnea, or changes in the body’s natural sleep rhythms.

Older adults are more vulnerable to conditions that disrupt sleep, such as insomnia, sleep apnea, and restless leg syndrome.

Medication side effects can also play a significant role in affecting sleep quality. It’s important for seniors to be aware of these changes and recognize when a problem arises.

Dr. Roth emphasizes the importance of addressing any changes in sleep patterns. “If you notice your sleep getting worse as you age, it’s not just an inevitable part of getting older,” she says. “There are doctors and sleep specialists who can help you improve your sleep quality.”

It’s crucial to seek professional help if sleep disturbances begin to interfere with your daily life. Treatment options are available, even for long-standing issues. If sleep problems are affecting your health or well-being, it’s time to consult with a doctor who can provide guidance and solutions.
