Couple face charges of killing nine family members in Ugunja

A chilling silence fell over the Siaya High Court on Monday, May 26 as Christopher Owino and Roseline Atieno Okelo stood accused of an unimaginable crime: the murder of nine members of a family.

The couple, appearing before Justice David Kemei, pleaded not guilty to the nine counts of murder, their lawyer, Philip Opondo, immediately seeking a Sh500,000 cash bail with a promise of adherence to court conditions.

However, the prosecution swiftly countered, signaling a determined fight against their release pending trial.

The victims – Ouma Opondo Adalla, his wife Jecinter Anyango, and their seven children, ranging from six months to seventeen years – perished in a horrific house fire in Upanda village, a blaze investigators believe was deliberately set.

The children were; Seline Atieno Ouma, Lyon Otieno Ouma, Loela Atieno Ouma, Loice Achieng Ouma, Davis Ochieng Ouma, Rayan Odhiambo Ouma, and Melvin Ochieng Ouma.

The hope for justice now rests with the court as the legal process begins, casting a dark shadow over the accused and the grieving community.
