DCI detectives arrest fake Taxi driver who stole Sh500,000 from a customer

NAIROBI – A man suspected of posing as a taxi driver to steal over Sh500,000 from a customer has been arrested by detectives in Nairobi.

The arrest of Fred Atandi Morara yesterday follows a report from the male victim, who fell prey to the elaborate scheme in Lavington on the night of August 8, 2025.

According to the complainant, he and a friend were leaving a social joint and were in the process of requesting a ride-hailing service when the suspect, who was waiting nearby, offered them a more competitive fare.

After dropping them off at their Airbnb, the suspect disappeared with the complainant’s phone.

The victim later discovered that over Sh500,000 had been fraudulently transferred from his accounts to several other mobile money accounts, which were immediately deactivated.

Detectives from the DCI Headquarters launched an investigation and tracked down the suspect.

Upon his arrest, Morara was found operating a Mazda Demio fitted with two sets of suspected fake registration plates, KDQ 810B and KDN 993Q.

Also recovered from the suspect were assorted mobile phones, several SIM cards, and a sisal rope, which detectives believe were used to facilitate the theft and potential violence.

Morara is currently in custody and is being processed before facing charges in court.
