Fake Gold Dealer arrested after defrauding a foreigner

A joint operation by DCI and KPS officers in Langata has resulted in the arrest of Stephen Magero, a key suspect in a sophisticated gold scam.

His arrest at Sultan Suites in Ngong View Estate follows a formal complaint from a Pakistani national who claims to have been defrauded of USD 34,800.

Investigations revealed that Magero allegedly presented the victim with 500 grams of fake gold bars, receiving the substantial cash payment in return.

The victim filed a report at Karen Police Station after tests confirmed the gold was counterfeit.

A subsequent search of Magero’s office led to the recovery of several items of evidence, including ten bars of suspected fake gold, smelting equipment, a weighing machine, a MacBook Pro laptop, and a mining certificate under the name “Chawanda Minerals.”

Officers also found business cards bearing a different name, “John Mbalaka,” along with various files and documents.

Magero is currently in custody, awaiting arraignment
