Parents stay home with your children, JSS teachers tell Siaya parents.

SIAYA: Junior Secondary School (JSS) teachers in Siaya County are threatening to stop teaching unless their three demands are met.

Their demands are: Permanent employment with pension benefits, payment for the two years they worked as interns and honoring court orders given on March 17.

“Let it be known that there shall be no school on Monday,  May 6, no JSS teachers will be in school. We shall engage in endless demonstration until the government honors the court’s directive,” said Andrew Ochanyo, Secretary JSS teachers in Siaya.

They warned they’ll keep protesting until the government listens, and they won’t tolerate any interference. Parents were advised to keep their children at home.

Siaya KUPPET chair Robert Ouko, called on the TSC to cease appealing the case that was ruled on March 17.

“The TSC must not appeal the ruling from the labor relations court, even on humanitarian grounds; it is difficult to have someone on internship for over two years. Secondly, Sh17,000 is not enough for a whole month, the employer must be human,” said Mr Ouko.

The teachers argue that it’s unfair to work as interns for so long and that their pay is too low. They insist that the government must respect the court’s decision.

Unless their demands are met, they say there won’t be any school on May 6.
