Land scam: former Tigania East MP arrested over Sh56 million Diamond Property scheme

Detectives from the DCI Headquarters’ Land Fraud Investigations Unit (LFIU) have arrested Josphat Gichuge Mwirabua, popularly known as “Kabeabea,” for allegedly orchestrating a massive land fraud scheme that defrauded unsuspecting buyers of more than Sh56 million.

Mwirabua, a prominent politician who previously served as the Member of Parliament for Tigania East and as Chairman of the Anti-Counterfeit Authority (ACA), was flushed out by detectives after defying multiple court summonses.

The multi-million-shilling scandal first unraveled when a group of investors revealed they had been duped into buying 50x100ft plots from Diamond Property Merchants (DPM) Ltd.

Individual buyers signed agreements with DPM Ltd and deposited a total of Sh16,476,950 directly into bank accounts linked to the former lawmaker.

When the buyers went to claim their land in Kajiado, they discovered the parcel had been secretly transferred to other individuals, and subdivided without their knowledge or consent.

Following a deep-dive investigation, the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) recommended that Mwirabua be charged with Obtaining Money by False Pretences.

As detectives dug deeper, a second, even larger fraud case emerged involving the same suspect and his Kimathi Street-based real estate firm.

According to police files, DPM Ltd aggressively advertised prime plots in Kajiado that were promised to come fully equipped with commercial greenhouses.

A separate group of complainants splashed out a staggering Sh40,140,000 for the agribusiness deal.

However, the promised title deeds were never delivered, and the greenhouses were never built.

When the DPP approved charges for the second case, Mwirabua refused to show up in court, prompting the Chief Magistrate’s Court in Kajiado to issue an active warrant for his arrest.

DCI detectives tracked down and apprehended the former MP.

He is currently booked in custody undergoing processing, the authorities confirmed he will first be arraigned at the Milimani Law Courts in Nairobi before being escorted to the Kajiado Law Courts to answer to the standing arrest warrant.
