DCI uncovers gang hideout in Eldoret raid, recovers military gear

Detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) have uncovered what is believed to be the operational base of a suspected armed gang in Eldoret, Uasin Gishu County.

The raid, conducted on Tuesday, July 7, 2026, in the Sungura area of Huruma Estate, comes less than 24 hours after a deadly police operation that left four suspected gangsters dead along the Eldoret–Kiplombe–Soy Road.

Acting on credible intelligence, detectives from DCI Soy raided the house, which preliminary investigations indicate served as the gang’s primary base of operations for a series of violent robberies across the North Rift region.

A thorough search of the premises yielded a cache of items, most notably five Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) jungle jackets.

Investigators believe these military-style garments were used by the criminal network to impersonate security officers, allowing them to carry out robberies while masquerading as police or military personnel.

Other items recovered during the raid included a heavy wedge hammer, a crowbar, and two mobile phones.

This follows a dramatic shootout shortly after midnight on Monday.

Police on routine patrol had intercepted six armed men dressed in military-style clothing who were allegedly robbing motorists and pedestrians near Greenfield Junction along the Eldoret–Kiplombe Road.

When ordered to stop and identify themselves, the suspects reportedly opened fire, leading to a gun battle that resulted in the deaths of four gang members.

Two other suspects managed to escape the scene with gunshot wounds, and a multi-agency operation is currently underway to track them down.

Crime Scene Investigation (CSI) detectives have processed the house in Huruma, documenting the scene and securing all recovered exhibits for forensic analysis.

Forensic experts hope the evidence will help establish the gang’s involvement in other unsolved robberies throughout the region, including incidents reported in Kitale, Kapenguria, Nandi, and Marakwet.

The DCI has praised the public for their continued vigilance and support in providing the intelligence that made these operations possible. Detectives remain on the trail of the remaining accomplices as they work to dismantle the entire criminal syndicate.
