Thirty-five pedestrians were arrested in Buruburu, Nairobi, for crossing the road beneath the local interchange rather than using the designated footbridge, as transport authorities ramp up a citywide enforcement campaign against risky road behavior.

The operation, led by the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) in partnership with the National Police Service (NPS) and Nairobi City County, focused on the busy Buruburu Interchange.

Officials noted that pedestrians darting across the multi-lane highway endanger their own lives while disrupting the smooth flow of vehicular traffic. All 35 individuals arrested during the sweep will be processed and arraigned in court.

The Buruburu arrests follow a similar operation on July 21 along Thika Superhighway near Allsops, where 22 pedestrians were arrested and charged for bypassing the nearby overpass.

According to NTSA data through June 30, 2026, pedestrians accounted for nearly four out of every ten road traffic deaths in Kenya.

Beyond law enforcement, teams are deploying along key corridors to combine court summonses with public education on the risks of jaywalking.

Authorities emphasize that pedestrian compliance is vital to reducing urban traffic fatalities and keeping major arterial roads moving.
