Inspector Kelvin Mwangi Muraguri, the Deputy Officer Commanding Station at Drive In Police Post, was arraigned at the Makadara Law Courts alongside co-accused Stephen Okello Obewa over an extortion scheme targeting online vendors.

The duo faced capital robbery with violence charges for ambushing Tanzanian national Kanuti Konrad and his wife, Beatrice Naliaka, in Kasarani on July 30, 2026.

What began as a routine smartwatch delivery turned into a terrifying ordeal when the couple was handcuffed and forced into a getaway car.

After robbing Konrad of multiple mobile phones and forcing an initial KSh 17,000 withdrawal, the gang demanded a one million ransom.

They drove to Equity Bank in Githurai 44, holding Naliaka hostage while sending Konrad inside to retrieve the funds.

Once inside, Konrad secretly alerted a bank teller, triggering an intervention by armed guards and Special Crimes Prevention Unit officers.

Following warning shots, police arrested Obewa at the scene, whose interrogation directly implicated Inspector Mwangi and several rogue officers who remain at large.

Appearing in court, the prosecution sought to detain the suspects to widen investigations into the extortion syndicate and trace fleeing accomplices Oliver Baraza, Job Sidiga, and Cyrus Onyango.

However, in a surprising turn of events, the case was withdrawn after the complainants and the accused informed the court that they had mutually agreed on an out-of-court settlement.
