In a surprising turn of events, the trial of former Tourism Minister Najib Balala and his co-accused, who faced corruption charges related to the construction of the proposed Ronald Ngala Utalii College in Kilifi County, has been terminated.
The Anti-Corruption Court in Malindi granted an application by the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) to withdraw the case under Section 87(a) of the Criminal Procedure Code.
Najib Balala, alongside former Principal Secretary Leah Adda Gwiyo and Joseph Odero of West Consult Engineers, were accused of involvement in fraudulent payments amounting to KSh 8.5 billion.
These funds were intended for the establishment of the Coast branch of Kenya Utalii College, later renamed Ronald Ngala Utalii College, during Balala’s tenure as Cabinet Secretary.
The arrest of these individuals, according to the prosecution, stemmed from their connection to the misappropriated funds meant for the Kilifi construction project.
The decision to terminate the case has sparked a wave of reactions, with many questioning the implications of this development on the broader fight against corruption.
As the dust settles, the public remains watchful, seeking assurance that justice and transparency will prevail in future governance and anti-corruption efforts.
