Why Faith Kipyegon is smiling after winning Silver in the 5000m race

Kenya’s Faith Kipyegon breathed a sigh of relief after the Olympic committee revoked their decision to disqualify her for allegedly pushing Ethiopia’s Gudaf Tsegay during the women’s 5000 meters final race.

Kipyegon, who narrowly missed out on the gold medal to fellow Kenyan Beatrice Chebet, was initially disqualified after a contentious moment with Tsegay.

Despite this, she managed to recover and achieve her season’s best time of 14:28:56.

Following an appeal, the committee reinstated Kipyegon’s silver medal. Ethiopian rival Sifan Hassan, who also ran her season’s best time of 14:30:61, settled for the bronze medal.

With this decision, Team Kenya in Paris has now secured three medals: a gold by Beatrice Chebet and a silver by Faith Kipyegon in the women’s 5000 meters, and a bronze by Mary Moraa in the women’s 800 meters.
