President William Ruto has urged Kenyans to refrain from protesting, despite calls for a demonstration by youth groups on Nane Nane Day, Thursday, August 8, 2024.
Speaking on Wednesday in Embu County, Dr Ruto emphasized the importance of maintaining peace and urged citizens to reject any form of destructive demonstrations.
“Sisi ni nchi ambayo tunaamini kwa amani. Hatutaki fujo katika taifa letu la Kenya. Hatutaki maandamano ambayo inaleta maafa, ambayo watu wanapoteza mali yao. Tunataka amani,” he said.
On Tuesday, acting Deputy Inspector General of Police Gilbert Masengeli assured the public of the National Police Service’s readiness to ensure peace throughout the country on Thursday. Speaking at the National Police Service Campus in Embakasi after discussions with regional police commanders, Masengeli noted that while security measures would be heightened, they would remain within normal limits.
“Every Kenyan has the legal right to demonstrate, picket, and assemble,” he stated. “However, everyone must respect the rule of law, recognizing that one person’s rights end where another’s begin.”
Masengeli reiterated that while peaceful demonstrations are allowed, they must adhere to legal guidelines to ensure order and safety for all.
