13 feared dead in an early morning accident at Migaa blackspot

In a devastating incident early this morning, at least 13 people are feared dead following a multi-vehicle collision at Migaa, near Salgaa, along the Eldoret-Nakuru road.

The accident occurred at approximately 5 a.m. and involved a bus that lost control as it traveled from Kericho towards Nakuru.

According to eyewitness reports, the bus, which was en route to Mombasa, experienced brake failure while navigating the steep and notorious stretch of road.

The driver, unable to regain control, crashed into the barriers and collided with several other vehicles before the bus careened into a ditch.

Rift Valley Regional Police Commander Jasper Ombati confirmed that emergency teams were quickly dispatched to the scene to coordinate the rescue efforts.

Police officers and Kenya Red Cross workers are actively involved in assisting survivors and recovering the bodies of those who tragically lost their lives.

So far, at least 36 people have been confirmed injured and have been rushed to Molo and Coptic Hospitals for treatment. In a statement, the Kenya Red Cross noted,

“The injured individuals have been taken to Molo and Coptic Hospitals following a road traffic incident. The Kenya Red Cross, alongside a multi-agency response team, is still at the scene providing assistance.”

The Migaa-Salgaa stretch of the Eldoret-Nakuru road is infamous for its high accident rates, and today’s tragedy is expected to cause significant traffic congestion in the area.

As authorities continue their rescue and recovery operations, the focus will likely turn to improving safety measures on this dangerous stretch of road to prevent further loss of life.
