The police in Uganda have denied allegations of shooting the opposition leader Robert Kyagulanyi aka Bobi Wine, insisting that the injury he sustained was the result of an accidental fall.
Mr Kyagulanyi accused the Ugandan Police Force of shooting him during a confrontation on Tuesday.
The incident occurred following a thanksgiving ceremony hosted by lawyer George Musisi in Bulindo, Kiira Municipality, Wakiso District.
After the event concluded, Bobi Wine and his team embarked on a procession through Bulindo town, a move the Ugandan Police had previously advised against.
According to Bobi Wine’s team, during the ensuing altercation with police, he was shot while attempting to get into his vehicle.
They have since shared their account of the events, claiming that the opposition leader’s injury is the result of a gunshot.
However, the Ugandan Police Force quickly refuted these claims. In a statement posted on its X page, the UPF asserted that Bobi Wine stumbled as he was getting into his car, which caused the injury.
The police emphasized that no officer had fired a shot during the incident.
The UPF further stated that an investigation would be launched to determine the facts of the case.
Bobi Wine was taken to Najaeem Medical Centre in Bulindo, where he received first aid treatment.
As tensions rise, the incident has sparked concerns among supporters and observers, with calls for a thorough and transparent investigation into what really transpired during the confrontation between Bobi Wine’s team and the police.
