Improved Kienyeji chicken, the new gold in Busia County

BUSIA: Poultry farmers in Busia County are breathing a sigh of relief after the county government, through the KELCOP project, launched a campaign to educate farmers on modern poultry farming, specifically rearing Improved Kienyeji chickens.

These improved chickens grow faster and provide income within a short period, offering farmers a significant economic boost.

In a follow-up report by Kondele News, the transformation is evident in Kosera village, Amukura East Ward, Teso South Constituency, where women from the Fariji Widows Self Help Group shared their experiences.

Led by their chairpersons, Angela Aluku and Teresa Papai, the women expressed their gratitude for the modern poultry farming initiative, highlighting the challenges they faced with traditional farming methods and the hope this new approach brings.

The group, consisting mainly of widows, spoke confidently about their motivation to embrace modern poultry farming.

They acknowledged that this project has given them a fresh perspective, with improved production and fewer challenges compared to traditional poultry farming.

Loice Akinyi, the KELCOP project coordinator in Teso South, revealed how the modern poultry farming project is transforming lives in the community, including improving nutrition for the locals.

Ms Akinyi stated that over 31 community groups in Busia County have benefited from this initiative, particularly in constituencies like Teso South, Funyula, Butula, and Budalang’i.

“This project has improved family nutrition because we now have multiple sources of food, and the training has been helpful in learning how to manage the birds since most of us depended on Kienyeji breeds,” Akinyi explained.

KELCOP project coordinator for Busia County, Radoli Shiundi, noted their ongoing efforts to increase the project’s impact by expanding the market for these chickens and creating a modern poultry trading center.

“On average, we’ve distributed between 350-400 chicks to 31 women’s groups, which translates to 11,000 chicks across all four targeted wards. Our projection is that the women will realize high sales in addition to the training they received for maximum production,” Shiundi emphasized.

The grateful farmers have lauded the Busia County government for this life-changing project and expressed their hopes of expanding the initiative further to continue reaping its benefits.
