The political alliance between Siaya Governor James Orengo and Alego Usonga MP Samuel Atandi appears to have hit rock bottom. Recent events in Siaya County indicate that the two leaders are no longer on the same page.
Once celebrated for their strong political camaraderie, the duo now resembles a proverbial estranged couple held together only by the electorate of Siaya County.
Speaking at a funeral in Alego Usonga over the weekend, MP Atandi launched a scathing attack on Governor Orengo, accusing him of betraying both Alego constituents and himself.
“I shall no longer fight for people to be elected in this county,” Atandi said. “There are people I campaigned for, but when it came time to share the fruits of our labor, Alego people were betrayed.”
Fallout With Deputy Governor and Nepotism Allegations
Atandi also criticized Orengo for his fallout with Deputy Governor William Oduol.
“The first betrayal was against Dr. Oduol. Then, I was sent away. Alego people now have nothing to hold onto in this regime,” Atandi remarked.
He further accused Orengo of nepotism, claiming the governor worked only with close family members and friends who controlled access to county resources.
“For services, you must go through specific people who are friends or relatives of the governor,” Atandi alleged.
Governor Orengo has refrained from engaging in the political disputes, choosing instead to focus on development projects during his public addresses.
Meanwhile, MP Atandi assured the electorate he would provide direction in addressing the county’s leadership challenges.
