A 30-year-old artisanal miner died, and another was seriously injured after a gold mining shaft collapsed at Gobei area in Bondo sub-county on Monday evening.
According to Site Manager Philip Chunga, the deceased miner, identified only as Bernard, was working inside the shaft alongside three colleagues when it suddenly crumbled, burying them alive.
Other miners at the site managed to rescue two workers who escaped unhurt, while a third sustained severe injuries and was rushed to Bondo Sub-County Hospital for treatment.
However, efforts to save Bernard were unsuccessful, as he was already dead by the time rescuers reached him.
Chunga expressed regret over the incident, emphasizing that Bernard was the sole breadwinner for his family. He urged fellow miners to take extra precautions to prevent such tragedies.
Bondo Sub-County Police Commander Robert Aboki confirmed the incident, stating that Bernard’s body was transferred to Bondo Sub-County Hospital mortuary for a postmortem examination.
