Suspected Ivory trafficker arrested in Kwale

LUNGA LUNGA: Detectives and wildlife rangers in Kwale County have arrested a suspected trafficker and seized 39 kilograms of elephant tusks in a high-stakes operation near the Lungalunga border.

The crackdown began on Saturday afternoon, March 28, 2026, after Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) officers received a tip-off about a man moving illegal wildlife trophies.

They immediately teamed up with local police to set a trap in the Shirikisho area.

At around 3:40pm, the team intercepted Nyamawi Mwandia Kulemba, who was riding an unregistered blue Haojin motorcycle.

Upon searching the bike, officers discovered four elephant tusks hidden inside sacks.

The suspect was arrested on the spot and taken to Lungalunga Police Station.

The tusks, which are valued as key evidence of poaching, have been locked away as KWS investigators work to trace where the elephants were killed and who was intended to buy the ivory.

Mr Kulemba remains in custody and is expected to be charged in court with being in possession of endangered species components.
