A 24-year-old remandee, Collins Cheruiyot, who was facing charges for allegedly breaking into his mother’s bar and stealing beer, has died by suicide at an Eldoret prison.
According to Turbo Sub-County Police Commander Patrick Wekesa, Cheruiyot took his own life after multiple failed attempts to convince his mother to withdraw the case.
He had pleaded with her to forgive him and secure his release, but she declined.
Court documents indicate that on May 24, 2024, at Burnt Forest Trading Centre in Ainabkoi Sub-County, Uasin Gishu County, Cheruiyot allegedly broke into Round Point Bar with intent to steal.
He first pleaded guilty to the charges on May 27, 2024, but later changed his plea to not guilty. His case was adjourned multiple times as he hoped his mother would intervene and withdraw the charges.
Most recently, Eldoret Senior Resident Magistrate Kimani Mukabi had set March 27, 2025, as the next mention date.
On Wednesday, Cheruiyot was found unresponsive in prison. Despite efforts by court orderlies and fellow inmates to rescue him, he was pronounced dead on arrival at Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital (MTRH).
His body has since been transferred to the MTRH morgue as authorities investigate the circumstances surrounding his death.
