Philip Aroko, prime suspect in Were’s murder, bail of Sh300k

Businessman Philip Aroko, a prime suspect in the murder of Kasipul Member of Parliament Charles Were, has been released on a cash bail of Sh300,000 by the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) Law Courts.

In her ruling, Principal Magistrate Irene Gichobi outlined strict conditions for Aroko’s release.

He must surrender his passport and is barred from traveling to Homa Bay County, the home of the slain legislator.

The court further prohibited Aroko from contacting the victim’s family, fellow suspects, or any individual linked to the ongoing case.

Magistrate Gichobi also ordered Aroko not to interfere with evidence or the course of investigations.

He will be required to report regularly to investigating officers and cooperate fully, including providing any material evidence related to the case.

The prosecution had strongly opposed his release, citing the sensitivity and high public interest surrounding the murder of the sitting MP.

“While the respondent has shown cooperation, we are handling a matter of grave concern to the public. We sought a seven-day detention to complete our investigations and determine the suspect’s exact role,” the prosecution told the court.

Aroko is one of 11 individuals currently under investigation in connection with MP Were’s killing. The next court mention is scheduled for June 3, 2025.
