UASIN GISHU: Former Central Police Station OCS, Chief Inspector Samson Tallam, has been arrested in Eldoret after reportedly leaving Nairobi without authorization.
Tallam, who had previously been interdicted, is now a key suspect in the ongoing investigation into the death of blogger and high school teacher Albert Ojwang, who died in police custody.
According to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), Tallam is considered a person of interest in the case. His arrest brings the number of individuals currently in custody over Ojwang’s death to three.
Tallam had earlier claimed he was being targeted by powerful individuals intent on making him a scapegoat.
He insisted that Ojwang was already in poor condition when he was brought into custody, prompting him to refuse admission and instead rush the teacher to Mbagathi Hospital—where he was later pronounced dead.
Ojwang was initially arrested at his home in Homa Bay on accusations of publishing false information.
He was transferred to Nairobi and detained at the Central Police Station, where he reportedly suffered a fatal beating.
The case has drawn widespread public attention and condemnation, with growing calls for accountability in police operations.
Two other police officers are also in custody, along with a technician alleged to have tampered with surveillance footage in an effort to conceal the incident.
A female officer linked to the case was interrogated for several hours on Friday and is expected to face further questioning.
The Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA), which is leading the investigation, revealed that several officers among the 17 initially questioned have since returned to amend their statements—offering new details about the events that led to Ojwang’s death.
As the investigation deepens, the case continues to shed light on troubling issues surrounding police conduct and custodial deaths in Kenya.
