Abala Wanga; Killings in Gem must stop

GEM: A cloud of fear hangs over Gem Constituency as local community members, leaders, and opinion shapers urgently call upon the Siaya County Commissioner to convene a security meeting.

This plea comes amidst a disturbing surge in mysterious deaths, with six individuals, predominantly women, having lost their lives in the past two months alone.

Speaking to the media, Abala Wanga, a respected leader from Gem, voiced profound concern over the “wanton killings,” stressing the critical need for immediate action.

“The killings of innocent people have become a worrying trend, and action must be taken,” Wanga asserted, emphasizing that “The right to life is not only enshrined in our constitution but also a moral right for all of us.”

He expressed dismay at the constituency’s grim transformation: “We can’t have a scenario where the great Gem Constituency, widely known in the republic as the pioneer source of academic elites and civilized people, now turns into a human slaughterhouse with wanton killings.”

Wanga poignantly highlighted the horrifying case of Elizabeth Atieno, a student at Uranga Secondary School, who was found dismembered after her death.

“Imagining that a young secondary school girl being killed and the body dismembered is chilling, and something has to be done, and the perpetrators be brought to face the law forthwith,” he added, his words underscoring the community’s anguish.

As plans for a crucial security meeting slowly materialize, stakeholders are united in their demand for swift measures.

The community and key stakeholders have put forth a clear set of recommendations: they advocate for enhanced police patrols and investigations throughout all locations; they insist on an urgent security meeting, to be convened by the County Commissioner, involving the Siaya County Police Commander, political leaders, chiefs, and the wider community; they urge the revival of the Nyumba Kumi initiative, fostering closer engagement between locals and chiefs; and crucially, they demand the immediate arrest of suspects to aid in bringing those responsible for these heinous killings to justice.
