KISII: A joint operation by the National Police Service and NACADA has led to the arrest of six individuals in Kisii County, targeting a network of drug traffickers and counterfeit alcohol dealers.
At a press briefing, Kisii County Police Commander Ronald Kirui detailed the major bust that netted five suspects and a large haul of bhang, including 79 brooms of suspected cannabis sativa.
The drugs, along with a motorbike and packaging materials, were retrieved from a premises at Mwamogesa village.
Police are actively searching for the main suspect, who, to the Commander’s frustration, is already facing a similar court case after being caught with 292 kg of bhang.
Commander Kirui praised the public for providing crucial tip-offs and called on community members to work with authorities to eradicate the problem.
He issued a stern warning to the main suspect to surrender, cautioning that “the long arm of the law would catch up with him.”
He also admonished local residents for “condoning the crime in their locality,” stating they must have been aware of the activities.
Nicholas Kosgey, NACADA’s Head of Enforcement, highlighted the alarming rise in drug addiction, especially bhang, in the region.
He linked the substance to an increase in motorbike accidents and other anti-social behaviors.
Kosgey affirmed NACADA’s commitment to upscaling anti-narcotics operations across the country, crediting the police for their close collaboration.
In a related arrest, another suspect was later apprehended in Kisii town for allegedly dealing in contraband alcohol.
