In a frantic, six-goal thriller at the Deutsche Bank Park, Eintracht Frankfurt and Borussia Dortmund reminded us exactly why we missed this league so much.
The match was a rollercoaster of momentum, tactical chess, and raw emotion, ending in a 3-3 draw that left both sets of fans breathless and perhaps a little bit heartbroken.
The fireworks started early. Just ten minutes in, Dortmund’s Maximilian Beier continued his red-hot form, ghosting to the near post to flick home a pinpoint cross from Julian Ryerson.
It was a “welcome back” punch to the gut for Frankfurt, but Dino Toppmöller’s men didn’t blink.
By the 22nd minute, they were level; Can Uzun stepped up to the penalty spot after a clumsy foul by Serhou Guirassy and coolly sent the keeper the wrong way.
The second half was even wilder, Felix Nmecha seemed to have snatched the momentum back for BVB in the 68th minute with a low drive that took a wicked deflection into the net.
Yet, the lead lasted a mere three minutes. Frankfurt’s new January signing, Younes Ebnoutalib, announced himself to the home crowd in spectacular fashion.
Picking up a defense-splitting through-ball from fellow debutant Arnaud Kalimuendo, the 22-year-old local lad rifled a finish past Gregor Kobel to make it 2-2.
A Stoppage-Time Heart-Stopper
As the clock ticked into added time, the stadium reached a fever pitch. In the 92nd minute, former Dortmund midfielder Mahmoud Dahoud thought he had written the headline of the season, curling a magnificent effort into the top corner to put Frankfurt 3-2 up.
The “Eagles” were seconds away from a historic victory.
But the Bundesliga had one last twist, in the 96th minute, with virtually the last kick of the game, substitute Carney Chukwuemeka scrambled home an equalizer from close range.
Silence fell over one half of the stadium while the yellow wall in the away end erupted.
For Niko Kovac’s Dortmund, this was a missed opportunity to put pressure on league leaders Bayern Munich, who still hold a commanding eight-point lead at the top.
For Frankfurt, the draw is bittersweet; while they proved they can go toe-to-toe with the giants, they remain three points adrift of the Champions League spots.
The real winner, however, was the league itself.
If this 3-3 draw is a preview of what 2026 has in store for us, we are in for one of the most exciting second halves of a season in years.
