Defending Champions, Kenya Police FC Held by Resilient Bankers

The match between the KPL champions, Kenya Police FC and KCB FC ended in a goalless stalemate, a result that spoke more of tactical discipline than a lack of ambition.

From the opening whistle at 3:00 pm yesterday, the “Law Enforcers” sought to impose the authority befitting their status as reigning kings of Kenyan football.

Having reinforced their squad with significant January investment, including the debut of Burkina Faso striker Yves Koutiama and Congolese winger Briyock Malonga, Police FC looked to bridge the gap toward the league summit.

However, they found a KCB side that was perfectly drilled under the watchful eye of veteran coach Robert Matano.

The first half was a masterclass in defensive organization.

While KCB enjoyed the lion’s share of possession of 57 percent, they struggled to find a clinical edge.

Their best chance of the opening period came from a free-kick on the edge of the box, which was unfortunately blazed over the bar.

Police FC, though seeing less of the ball, remained the more dangerous side on the counter, utilizing their 93 percent pass accuracy to thread through balls that kept the KCB back-line on high alert.

The second half saw both managers attempt to break the deadlock through the bench.

Matano introduced former Harambee Stars maestro Francis Kahata to add creative spark, while Police responded by welcoming back winger Alvin Mang’eni from a long-term injury.

Despite a late flurry of activity that saw Police register 20 shot attempts, they were repeatedly thwarted by KCB goalkeeper Bonphas Munyasa, who stood like a wall between the posts to ensure the Bankers claimed a vital point.

As the final whistle sounded, the 0-0 draw left both teams in familiar territory.

Kenya Police FC remains in the hunt for back-to-back glory, sitting 6th on the table with 24 points, just a handful of points adrift of leaders AFC Leopards and Gor Mahia.

For KCB, the resilient performance keeps them firmly in the mid-table mix with 23 points, proving once again that they are one of the toughest units to break down in the top flight.

In a season that is proving to be a marathon of tactical endurance, yesterday’s shared spoils served as a reminder that in the FKF Premier League, reputation alone is rarely enough to secure all three points.
