NAIROBI; A wave of public outrage, led by former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko, has intensified following a horrific acid attack on a woman in Kibera.
Police are now under pressure to arrest the mastermind behind the assault, identified as the victim’s jilted ex-boyfriend.
The victim, Mary Clair and a gospel singer, is currently fighting for her life at Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH) after a hired accomplice allegedly poured acid on her face.
While the primary attacker was intercepted by an angry mob and rescued by police, the ex-boyfriend remains at large.
According to eyewitnesses and reports shared by Mike Sonko, the hired assailant attempted to flee the scene immediately after the act but was cornered by members of the public.
“The attacker was cornered while trying to escape, assaulted by an angry mob, and later rescued by police. He is now in custody, while the ex-boyfriend remains at large. Mary is currently in critical condition at KNH,” Sonko stated via his official Facebook page.
The most disturbing aspect of the case is the revelation that the victim had sought police intervention months prior to the attack.
In November 2025, Mary reportedly filed a statement regarding death threats from her ex-boyfriend, but no preventive action was taken.
“Disturbingly, she had reported death threats in November last year, but no action was taken,” Sonko added. “We will work with authorities to ensure justice is served. All those responsible must be held accountable.”
In an effort to expedite the arrest of the mastermind, the former Governor has placed a bounty on the suspect’s head.
“I am offering a reward of Sh 50,000 to anyone who provides information leading to the arrest of Mary’s ex-boyfriend behind this heinous act,” he announced.
