Wanyonyi and Arop set for rematch at Weltklasse Zürich

Olympic champion Emmanuel Wanyonyi is gearing up to renew his intense middle-distance rivalry with former World Champion Marco Arop at the upcoming Weltklasse Zürich Diamond League, scheduled for Thursday, August 27, 2026, at the Letzigrund Stadium.

Event organizers confirmed that the two titans will headline a star-studded men’s 800m field, setting the stage for what promises to be a thrilling tactical duel ahead of the season-ending Brussels Diamond League meet a week later.

The upcoming showdown marks only the second time this season that Wanyonyi and Arop will face off over two laps.

Their previous encounter this year came at the Oslo Diamond League in early June, where Wanyonyi secured second place and Arop finished third.

The pair had originally planned to lock horns again at the London Diamond League, but travel and visa setbacks sidelined the Canadian star.

Their fierce rivalry dates back to the 2022 World Athletics Championships in Oregon and has since evolved into one of the most compelling matchups in modern athletics.

The Zurich race is shaping up to be one of the fastest of the year, bringing together the premier talents in middle-distance running, comprising Emmanuel Wanyonyi (KEN), the reigning Olympic champion who recently made headlines by breaking the 1,000m world record in Monaco.

Other athletes are Marco Arop (CAN) who is the former World Champion and fierce competitor, Djamel Sidat of Algeria and Gabriel Tual of France.

“Weltklasse Zürich unites the four fastest currently active 800-meter runners in history in one race,” organizers highlighted in the official athlete announcement.

For Wanyonyi, the Zurich fixture serves as an important test of his credentials.

After posting consecutive runner-up finishes in Rabat and Oslo earlier in the season, the 21-year-old Kenyan endured a fourth-place finish in London despite a strong initial push.

With the 2026 Commonwealth Games also looming on his calendar, Wanyonyi will be looking to rediscover peak dominance as he targets another stellar performance on the global circuit.
