Mombasa United appoint ex-Yanga coach Abdulhamid Moallin ahead of Premier League debut

Mombasa United have signaled their serious top-flight ambitions ahead of their debut FKF Premier League campaign by pulling off a major coaching coup, securing the services of former Young Africans (Yanga SC) head coach Abdulhamid Moallin.

The Somali-American tactician steps into the hot seat left vacant by Peter Okidi, who recently departed the Coastal side to join KCB FC as an assistant coach.

Determined to avoid any pre-season disruptions, the ambitious top-flight newcomers moved decisively to seal Moallin’s signature, announcing his arrival through a sleek video across their social media channels alongside the welcoming message:

“Welcome to Mombasa, Coach Abdulhamid Moallin.”

Moallin’s appointment brings a wealth of high-level continental experience to the newly promoted side as they prepare to test themselves against Kenya’s elite.

Remarkable achievements

The CAF A Licence holder boasts a decorated coaching portfolio spanning East Africa, the Horn of Africa, and the United States.

He arrives fresh off an impressive stint in Tanzania, where he stepped in on an interim basis alongside Patrick Mabedi following the departure of Pedro Gonçalves, successfully steering giants Young Africans to their record-extending 32nd Tanzania Premier League title.

Beyond his title-winning run with Yanga, Moallin has built a strong tactical reputation across the regional football landscape.

His previous managerial stops include Tanzanian outfits Azam FC and KMC, Somali club Horseed SC, and a tenure with the Somalia national team.

His coaching journey originally kicked off in the United States, where he honed his craft within the youth setup of Major League Soccer franchise Columbus Crew SC.

Revered for his strict tactical discipline and proven track record in player development, Moallin is widely viewed as the ideal candidate to guide Mombasa United through the demanding transition from second-tier football to the top division.

To bolster the technical bench, Moallin will work alongside returning coach Muhamed Ahmed Mchulla, who rejoins the club following a stint at Mathare United.

Qualified duo

Together, the duo will be tasked with navigating one of the most significant chapters in the club’s history.

Mombasa United earned their historic promotion after securing a third-place finish in the 2025/26 National Super League season, earning top-flight status for the very first time.

With pre-season preparations now gathering momentum under an experienced championship-winning coach, the Coastal outfit is aiming for much more than mere survival in the FKF Premier League as they look to build a firm foundation for long-term competitiveness in domestic football.
