Police in Nyatike, Migori County, have launched a homicide investigation after the body of an unidentified teenage girl was retrieved from River Ongoche on Wednesday afternoon.
The discovery was made around noon within Central Kanyarwanda Sub-location, God-Bondo Location, when passersby spotted the body floating in the water and alerted authorities.
Responding officers recovered the partially decomposed body of the victim, who is estimated to be around 14 years old.
Investigators suspect foul play, noting severe injuries on the victim’s forehead and the back of her head.
The body was discovered unclothed, and blood-stained grass along the riverbank suggests she may have been assaulted nearby before being dumped into the river.
Detectives have secured the scene and gathered preliminary evidence as they work to reconstruct the events leading to her death.
The victim’s body has been moved to the Migori County Referral Hospital mortuary for preservation, where a post-mortem examination will be conducted to confirm the exact cause of death and assist in her identification.
