From parliament to TikTok: how Kenyan comedians turned the new police uniforms into viral gold

The rollout of the newly redesigned Kenya Police uniforms, featuring a return to the classic sky-blue shirts and deep navy-blue trousers, alongside special additions like integrated name tags and dedicated maternity options, has dominated national discourse.

While opposition politicians have heavily scrutinized the changes and debated the move in political circles, Kenya’s creative digital space quickly took a different, much lighter route.

Leading content creators and comedians, notably Mammito and Mjaka Mfine alongside fellow creators like Lenny Vybzz, wasted no time jumping on the trend, giving Kenyans a much-needed break from serious political sparring with a wave of hilarious skits.

Controversy turned to comedy

As politicians trade barbs over policy and public resource allocation regarding the uniform transition, social media platforms like TikTok and YouTube have been flooded with parodies.

Comedians capitalized on the stark contrast of the sky-blue and navy-blue combination, staging exaggerated fashion-runway walks and mock-inspections that left netizens in stitches.

The inclusion of specialized options for pregnant and nursing officers, a progressive step in reality, became a goldmine for comedic exaggeration and skits highlighting everyday workplace ironies.

Partnering with internet heavyweights, the skits have amassed millions of views, proving once again that Kenyans use humor as a primary coping mechanism during heavy political news cycles.

Mammito for instance joked about Sh50 note having a pleasant smelling, quenching her craving for notes from motorists.

While opposition leaders continue to voice public contempt and legal or policy-oriented objections in mainstream media, online comedians have successfully shifted the narrative, turning what was meant to be a strict institutional rollout into a massive nationwide punchline.
